What can you do with a half square triangle? The possibilities are endless. Any pattern for log cabin quilts can be done with half square triangles in a fraction of the time. Above are three radically different layouts. The first is made by grouping the green fabrics to create a Christmas tree against golden beige fabric. Look closely and you can see that a few blocks were fussy cut to feature cardinals. The second layout reminds me of a southwestern star. Now imagine the same pattern with bright gold fabrics against a navy background. A totally different look. The third quilt orients the dark part of the square in the same direction. Easy-Peasy! Quilting was done with a cotton variegated thread to bring out the colors of the fabrics. What can you create with half square triangles?
