Although one motif was used in each block and it covers both the black fabric and the stripes, the effect is of two types of quilting.  The picture is deceiving as in  real life the stitching faded away on the colored fabric and popped on the black and gave it texture.   When I look at the back, I see iron works and the block stitching is quite apparent.
